Keir Starmer has stood his ground, telling the cabinet he would remain as prime minister, insisting that the threshold required for a leadership challenge had not been reached, as ministers publicly expressed support for the leader.
It was also revealed that the PM did not hold any one-on-one meetings before or after cabinet, except with his close ally, Richard Hermer.
Starmer told ministers he planned to continue leading the government despite pressure over his position.
A source said Wes Streeting tried to speak privately with Starmer after the meeting but was unable to do so.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting, the PM said: “As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results, and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised.”
Defending the government’s stability amid growing political pressure, he added: “The past 48 hours have been destabilising for the government, and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families.
“The Labour party has a process for challenging a leader, and that has not been triggered”.
“The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a cabinet,” he added, urging the cabinet to continue governing.
