A substance has eaten so deep into the hearts of our future leaders, and the pressure to measure up is now a voice that echoes in the minds of young Nigerians. This substance, as subtle as it is, has stolen moments that are meant to be celebrated, leaving individuals with the feeling of not being enough.
One of its causes are social feeds, which portrays the lives of people as perfect, displaying flashy cars, expensive lifestyles and building up a misleading notion that everyone has their lives figured out.
The tyranny of comparison keeps stealing our joy, putting out a breed of individuals without originality. The aforementioned observation can be deciphered when you pick out a number of youths to request for their ambition. In doing this, you’d discover that out of 100%, 5% persons are moving with clarity, 10% persons aren’t sure of purpose and the remaining 75% percent have lost their originality.

This tyranny isn’t just displayed in materialistic possessions; but is displayed in successes in careers, breaking educational milestones and relationship statuses. This substance, when allowed to spread, makes one overlook the processes and struggles that popped up, before making it to the frontline. And before you know it, an individual sees nothing in celebrating small victories and taking the world at one’s pace.
In another light, we’d have considered comparison to be advantageous because of its pull to make one do better for oneself. But when it is allowed to sum up into tyranny, one becomes subjected to its rule, bearing its fruits in various ways, knowingly and unknowingly. The tyranny of comparison have made most persons conclude life to be unfair if they aren’t always the celebrated ones. This fear of not measuring up can take away authenticity, creativity, and cause low self esteem.
Eliminating this substance requires building up a strong and positive mindset, walking and believing in one’s vision, and building strategic systems; that is, systems that brings about metamorphosis. It is often said that as a man thinks in his heart, so he is. This brings us to a conclusion that one needs to feed his/her mind till maturity, by embracing the necessary processes in one’s purpose. Breaking free from this tyranny means one accepts that online personalities face their individual problems behind the camera.
Living outside consistent comparison means, one begins to embrace personal developments, believing in his/her innate process, and believing in the law of time and season, which explains that there is a time assigned to every individual to shine their lights.
Diverse expression of talent is what we need, to build a community of thinking and woke individuals, not a solitary expression of talents.
