As political parties begin early preparations for the 2027 general elections, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has warned aspirants seeking elective positions under the party to conduct themselves peacefully during the forthcoming primaries or face sanctions.
Yilwatda issued the warning on Monday in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, Abimbola Tooki.

According to the statement, the APC leadership will not tolerate any action capable of disrupting the smooth conduct of the primaries. The party chairman said any aspirant, supporter or group found instigating violence, sponsoring unrest, engaging in anti-party activities or attempting to undermine the credibility of the process would face disciplinary action.
He said such sanctions could include immediate suspension from the party.
Yilwatda said the APC had worked hard to build what he described as a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most organised and nationally accepted political platforms. He added that no personal ambition would be allowed to threaten the collective interest of the party or the stability of the country.
“In every democratic contest, only one person will eventually emerge victorious. What is important is the spirit with which the process is approached. I urge all aspirants to display maturity, patriotism and good sportsmanship by embracing the outcome of the primaries in the overall interest of the party and our democracy,” he said.
The APC chairman urged aspirants to see themselves as ambassadors of the party, saying their conduct before, during and after the primaries would reflect the party’s values, discipline and commitment to democratic order.
He also appealed to supporters of aspirants to avoid inflammatory statements, intimidation and any form of behaviour that could create tension within the party. According to him, internal contests should strengthen the APC rather than divide it.
Yilwatda said the party would put necessary measures in place to ensure a transparent and peaceful process, adding that aspirants must be ready to respect the rules guiding the primaries.
He noted that democracy requires discipline, patience and respect for institutions, especially during internal party contests where emotions are often high.
The warning comes as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with many politicians expected to seek party tickets for various elective positions across the country.
Yilwatda said the APC would continue to encourage fair competition, but warned that the party would act firmly against anyone who attempts to turn the primaries into a crisis.
