Vodafone has decided to become a total owner of Britain’s leading mobile provider VodafoneThree for £4.3 billion ($5.8 billion). It will serve as an important step in the company’s process of transformation.
As part of the plan, Vodafone will purchase its 49%-shareholder CK Hutchison, which is based in Hong Kong, through the cancellation of shares. Upon successful implementation and will own the whole enterprise.
It should be noted that the formation of VodafoneThree took place just recently as a result of the consolidation of the two companies – Vodafone UK and Three UK. They merged their clients’ base to become the leader in terms of the number of users among all mobile networks in Great Britain.
As per representatives of the company, it is now time to consolidate ownership because total control will contribute to improvements in the country’s digital sphere and enable stronger actions.
Industry observers have seen this step as a critical one. In the opinion of Dan Coatsworth of AJ Bell, the company had struggled for years due to heavy debts and poor growth, but now there were some early signs of a recovery in terms of both business and finances.
This acquisition can be seen as part of the broader transformation strategy initiated by Vodafone’s Chief Executive Officer Margherita Della Valle in 2023. It involved significant reductions in staff in various markets and divestitures in such countries as Italy and Spain.
There have been some encouraging results recently as the company posted better-than-anticipated revenues from Germany its biggest market together with better momentum after the UK merger.
This takeover is likely to be completed in the second half of 2026 while Vodafone is going to publish its annual report in the next week.
