Manchester United have secured qualification for the Champions League after missing out for two consecutive seasons following a 3–2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, where Kobbie Mainoo scored the winning goal to seal the club’s return to Europe’s top competition.
Firstly, this achievement highlights the strong leadership of Michael Carrick, who took over from Ruben Amorim on 13 January 2026. Since then, Carrick has transformed the team’s performance.
He led United through 13 league matches, winning 9, drawing 2, and losing just 1, collecting 29 points in the process. As a result, the team climbed from 7th position to 3rd place, finishing with an 11-point gap above 5th place. In addition, Bryan Mbeumo emerged as the club’s top scorer with nine goals.

Before Carrick’s arrival, however, the season looked bleak. United started poorly under Amorim, losing at home to Arsenal on the opening day and dropping as low as 16th place. Nevertheless, Carrick quickly changed the team’s direction and restored confidence, guiding them to a strong finish and Champions League qualification.
Meanwhile, the match against Liverpool reflected United’s season in many ways. At the start, United played with intensity. They pressed high and scored two quick goals, showing clear attacking intent. Consequently, Liverpool struggled to settle into the game.
However, in the second half, Liverpool responded strongly. They took advantage of defensive mistakes, and players like Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo helped level the score. As a result, the momentum shifted, and United came under serious pressure.
Despite this, United did not give up. Instead, they stayed focused and showed resilience. In the closing stages, Mainoo stepped up and scored the winning goal, securing the victory and earning the Man of the Match award.
