As preparations for the 2027 presidential election intensify, activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has sparked fresh controversy by claiming that Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate who recently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), is working for President Bola Tinubu.
Adeyanju, a vocal critic of the opposition, made the allegation while lambasting opposition leaders as “the most useless and irresponsible in Africa.”
In a post on X, he expressed frustration over the persistent division within opposition ranks, despite the economic and social challenges Nigeria has faced in the past three years.

He wrote: “Peter Obi is working for Tinubu. The opposition leaders in Nigeria are the most useless in Africa. They are too irresponsible. For Nigeria to still have a divided opposition in 2026 after what happened to this country in the last 3 years is a huge shame.
These guys are sworn enemies of Nigeria. Tinubu is not even playing at all. Can you imagine.”
The remarks come shortly after Obi defected from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the NDC, alongside former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.
The move, which occurred in early May 2026, follows Obi’s resignation from the ADC amid reported internal crises, factionalism, and litigation. Both politicians received membership cards from the NDC in Abuja, signalling a potential alliance or joint ticket to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
In the 2023 election, Obi contested under the Labour Party banner, securing significant support particularly among younger voters with his “Obidient” movement, while Tinubu won on the APC platform.
Obi’s latest party switch has been interpreted by some as an attempt to secure a clearer path to the presidential ticket, free from the legal and factional battles plaguing the ADC.

Adeyanju’s comments reflect growing scepticism among certain political observers about the opposition’s ability to present a united front against President Tinubu.
He has previously suggested that Obi’s political manoeuvres ultimately benefit the incumbent, a claim that has drawn sharp criticism from Obi’s supporters, who accuse Adeyanju of seeking attention without evidence.
The development underscores the fluid and often fragmented nature of Nigerian opposition politics. With the 2027 race heating up, questions remain over whether the NDC can consolidate enough support to mount a credible challenge or if divisions will once again favour the ruling party.
