Governor Hope Uzodimma has said the South-East made a “wrong political calculation” during Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, expressing confidence that the outcome will not be repeated in 2027.
Uzodimma made the remarks while hosting leaders of the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, at the Government House in Owerri.
Reflecting on the 2023 polls, the governor described the region’s voting pattern as an error, urging political stakeholders to prioritise unity and collective progress despite differences. He stressed that cooperation among leaders and citizens would be essential for strengthening the South-East’s position in national politics.

“We made a wrong national political calculation in the South East in 2023. What happened in the South East in 2023 is a political accident that will not repeat itself,” Uzodimma said.
During the 2023 presidential election, the South-East overwhelmingly supported Peter Obi of the Labour Party, delivering him substantial votes across the region. Uzodimma, however, suggested that a different political alignment would better serve the region’s long-term interests.
He argued that for the South-East to wield greater influence at the federal level, it must align more closely with the ruling APC. According to him, active participation in the party at the centre would enable the region to play a more significant role in shaping national policies and decisions.
The governor also linked political alignment to developmental gains, noting that stronger support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could translate into increased access to federal initiatives and opportunities. He maintained that political investment often yields tangible returns for regions that engage effectively with the central government.
Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Uzodimma expressed optimism that the APC could secure widespread backing in the South-East, projecting a decisive victory for Tinubu in the region.
He further reassured residents of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and stability, pledging his administration’s continued commitment to security and regional cohesion.
