The Rivers State Police Command on Monday confirmed an attack on a traditional ruler His Royal Majesty, King Mene Baridam in Khana Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.
It was revealed in the statement distributed by the Force spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko that the monarch sustained a gunshot injury.
New Daily Prime earlier reported that the incident occurred on 25 January, at about 5:30pm, when King Baridam, the Paramount Ruler of Bangha Community, was returning from Okwale Community where he had attended a meeting.
Police said that while the monarch’s convoy was navigating Tekar Sogho Road leading to the East–West Road in Khana LGA, suspected gunmen reportedly emerged from the bush and opened fire on his vehicle, a black Prado Jeep.
Further revelation disclosed that the attack damaged the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.
During the incident, King Baridam was hit by a bullet in the thigh and was subsequently taken to a medical facility, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Following the report made at the police station, patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area to comb the surroundings and track down the assailants.
The Commands spokesperson said investigation is ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the attack.
Confirming the development, Iringe-Koko, assured residents that the command is committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
She urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The attack has heightened security concerns in the area, as residents await further updates from the authorities.
