Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally enrolled as a member of the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State, marking a significant shift in the buildup to the 2027 elections.
His registration was completed on Monday, days after he informed ADC supporters and political stakeholders in the state of his intention to join the party. The move was confirmed by his aide, Abdul Rasheeth, in a statement shared with PUNCH Online.
Images and videos from the event captured Atiku’s convoy driving into the community as enthusiastic supporters drummed, sang, and waved placards bearing his portrait. The former vice president acknowledged the cheering crowd before receiving his ADC membership card.
Shortly after, he posted on his official X handle, “It’s official. -AA.”
Monday’s exercise puts a formal seal on Atiku’s affiliation with the coalition party he previously endorsed in July as a unifying platform for key opposition figures — including Peter Obi and others— to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next general election.
Until now, Atiku and several other opposition leaders had held off on officially registering with the ADC. His entry is expected to give the party greater visibility and energise ongoing efforts to build a stronger opposition bloc ahead of 2027.
