Nollywood actress and producer Sandra Okunzuwa has opened up about how an onscreen kissing scene once cost her a romantic relationship, revealing the emotional and personal challenges actors sometimes face because of their profession.
The actress made the revelation while speaking during a recent episode of the BTS Reality podcast, where she discussed the realities of filming romantic scenes and how such moments can affect actors’ private lives.

According to Sandra Okunzuwa, many people wrongly assume actors enjoy intimate scenes on movie sets, whereas the reality is often uncomfortable, highly technical, and far from romantic.
Sandra Okunzuwa explained that filming kissing scenes usually happens in crowded environments with cameras, lighting equipment, directors, crew members, and multiple interruptions, making it difficult for actors to become emotionally invested in the moment.
“When actors kiss while filming, about 20 people are watching them, and instructions are also being dished out to them,” she said.
The actress noted that the atmosphere on movie sets is often tense and controlled, which removes any sense of romance viewers may perceive on screen.
“Even the AC will be turned off, and the director will be monitoring and instructing them all the way through. So how can anyone be in the mood or turned on in such conditions and environment?” she asked.
Sandra Okunzuwa stressed that many actors simply perform intimate scenes as part of their professional responsibilities and not because they enjoy them.
According to her, viewers often confuse acting with reality, forgetting that actors are portraying fictional characters rather than expressing genuine emotions or romantic intentions.
She admitted that if it were possible for filmmakers to completely avoid kissing scenes without affecting storytelling quality, she would support the idea.
“Onscreen kisses are not even enjoyable. If it is possible for them to be scrapped and viewers will still enjoy movies, then I am in support,” she stated.
The actress further explained that romantic scenes can create serious tension in actors’ relationships, especially when their partners struggle to separate acting from real life.
Sharing her personal experience, Sandra Okunzuwa recounted how her former boyfriend ended their relationship after someone allegedly sent him a scene from one of her movies where she kissed another actor.
“I once lost a relationship because someone sent my ex-boyfriend a scene from a movie where I kissed an actor,” she revealed.
She explained that at the time, she believed his reaction was rooted in insecurity, although she later came to understand that not everyone can emotionally handle dating someone in the entertainment industry.
“At the time, I felt his reaction came from a place of insecurity,” she said.
The actress acknowledged that relationships involving actors often come with unique pressures, including public scrutiny, social media criticism, and jealousy triggered by intimate movie scenes.
“But honestly, it is not easy,” she added.
Sandra Okunzuwa said she no longer judges people who choose not to date actors because everyone has different emotional boundaries and levels of tolerance in relationships.
“I don’t blame people who say they can’t date actors because everyone has to choose what they can tolerate in a partner,” she stated.
Her comments have sparked reactions online, with many social media users debating whether actors’ partners should feel threatened by onscreen intimacy.
While some people agreed with her position that acting is purely professional, others argued that romantic scenes can still create emotional discomfort in relationships.
The actress also used the opportunity to encourage viewers to better understand the difference between actors and the fictional roles they portray on screen.
According to her, maintaining a healthy balance between personal life and professional life is important for actors who regularly take on emotionally demanding roles.
She emphasised that the public should avoid assuming that actors’ onscreen chemistry automatically reflects their real-life feelings or relationships.
Sandra Okunzuwa revelation adds to a growing conversation within Nollywood about the emotional realities of acting and the challenges entertainers face behind the glamour often associated with the industry.
Over the years, several Nigerian actors have spoken openly about how fame, romantic scenes, and public perception have affected their relationships and marriages.
Some actors have also admitted that their partners sometimes struggle with trust issues after watching them perform intimate scenes with colleagues.
Despite the challenges, many entertainers continue to stress the importance of professionalism, noting that acting requires sacrifice and emotional discipline.
Sandra Okunzuwa remains one of Nollywood’s fast-rising actresses and producers, known for her appearances in several Nigerian films and television productions.
Her candid remarks on the podcast have continued to generate conversations about love, insecurity, professionalism, and the realities of life in the entertainment industry.
