The Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally, has expressed her support for Pope Leo XIV’s calls for peace.
Mullally called on Anglicans to stand in solidarity with the Pope following Donald Trump’s rejection of remarks suggesting that a “delusion of omnipotence” was driving the US-Israeli war in Iran.
This follows a warning by the pontiff, who said the world is being destroyed by “a handful of tyrants,” noting that despite this, “it is held together by a multitude of supportive brothers and sisters.”
The archbishop said: “I stand with my brother in Christ, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, in his courageous call for a kingdom of peace. As innocent people are killed and displaced, families torn apart and futures destroyed, the human cost of war is incalculable.”
She urged political leaders to adopt peaceful approaches to resolving conflicts, saying: “We must also urge all those entrusted with political authority to pursue every possible peaceful and just means of resolving conflict.”

Calling on Anglicans for support, Mullally said: “I therefore urge Anglicans across the Church of England and the Anglican Communion to join with His Holiness in raising our voices for peace and justice throughout the world,” and urged Christians to “work and pray for peace.”
The dispute follows remarks made by Pope Leo XIV during evening prayers at the Vatican on Saturday, where he referred to a “delusion” as the United States and Iran began direct negotiations in Pakistan.
In response, Trump criticized the pope in a social media post, describing him as “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” and suggested his appointment was influenced by his American background. He also told reporters he was “not a fan” of the pontiff and shared, before deleting, an AI-generated image depicting himself in a religious context.
The pope, speaking to reporters while travelling to Algeria, declined to engage directly in the dispute, stating that he was not a politician. He said he was not afraid to speak out on the message of the gospel but did not intend to enter into a debate with the US president.
