The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a man in Ahoada West Local Government Area of the state, announcing the arrest of three suspects in connection with the incident while investigations continue.
This incident was confirmed by the Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko on Monday.
The confirmation followed the interception of the suspects by the Youth and Joint Task Force, supported by soldiers guarding critical facilities, as they allegedly attempted to dump the corpse of the deceased in Ukpeliede community on Sunday.
Those arrested are identified as the Vigilante Vice Chairman of Okogbe community, Joshua, a vigilante member, Friday Silas, and a commercial motorcycle rider, Godlove Obed.
Security operatives, according to Revelation Agent Report, were said to have been on heightened alert following reports of suspicious movements and recent security threats in the area.
The deceased, identified as Ghadafi, was reportedly apprehended in Okogbe community over allegations of theft, including stealing palm fruits. Subsequent findings revealed that he was assaulted by community youths, an action that allegedly resulted in his death.
Events unfolded around 1:30 pm when security personnel observed a motorcycle conveying what appeared to be a lifeless body towards the Idu Ekpeye axis. Surveillance efforts later revealed that the corpse had been dropped in Ukpeliede community and subsequently moved again, raising suspicion of an attempt to conceal the incident.
A coordinated response involving community security teams, soldiers, and other security agencies led to the arrest of the suspects while they were reportedly heading back towards Okogbe community. The suspects later led operatives to the location where the corpse had been temporarily relocated.
Police authorities disclosed that the deceased had been linked to several alleged criminal activities in the past, including theft and an attempted sexual assault in 2023. Despite these allegations, the police stated that the circumstances surrounding his death remained under investigation.
The suspects have been taken into custody as detectives continue to probe the incident, while the body of the deceased has been recovered for further examination.
The Rivers State Police Command assured that all those found culpable would be made to face the full weight of the law as investigations progress.
