The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans to challenge a Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan that declined its request for an order of mandamus.
The court ruled that granting the application would amount to “sitting on appeal” over decisions of courts with equal jurisdiction — a verdict the faction said it had anticipated.
In a statement issued by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, on Friday, the group said it had directed its lawyers to immediately file an appeal and take all necessary legal steps to defend its position.
Despite the judgment, the faction maintained that its leadership structure remains valid, insisting that the Turaki-led group that emerged from the Ibadan convention is still legally recognised.
It said it was confident that the appellate courts would eventually affirm its stance.
“Notwithstanding this judgment, the Kabiru Turaki–led Peoples Democratic Party, which emerged from the Ibadan Convention, remains legally intact and unshaken,” the statement said.
The faction also urged party members to remain calm and steadfast, stressing that the internal reform agenda was still on track.
“We therefore urge our members to remain resolute and committed, as there is absolutely no cause for alarm. The rebirth movement remains firmly on course,” it added.
The latest development reflects the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP, with rival factions seeking judicial validation of their claims. As the case heads to the appellate court, the outcome is expected to have significant implications for the party’s future political direction.
