The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, 21 February 2026, due to their coincidence with the Ramadan fasting period.
In a letter dated 22 January 2026, addressed to INEC, the party highlighted that the election date falls during Ramadan, which is expected to commence around mid-February 2026 and continue for approximately one month.
The ADC argued that this timing could significantly affect voter turnout, as a substantial portion of the FCT electorate observes the fast.
The letter, signed by ADC National Chairman Senator David A. B. Mark and National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, described Ramadan as a period of profound cultural and religious importance for Muslims.

It stressed that holding the polls during this time might constrain or disadvantage eligible voters in fully exercising their constitutional rights.
The party called for the elections to be rescheduled to a date after the conclusion of Ramadan, emphasising that such a step would promote fairness, inclusivity, and broader participation in the democratic process.
“Electoral legitimacy is enhanced when processes are designed to encourage broad participation and reflect sensitivity to the social and religious realities of the electorate,” the letter stated.
The ADC further noted its commitment to an institutional and procedural approach, expressing willingness to comply with all legal requirements under the Electoral Act, the Constitution, and INEC guidelines.
It requested guidance on submitting a formal application for the postponement.

The position was reiterated in a press statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who reaffirmed the ADC’s dedication to electoral arrangements that prioritise citizens, respect diversity, and bolster public confidence in democratic institutions.
The FCT Area Council elections involve choosing leaders for the territory’s six area councils, which function similarly to local government areas elsewhere in Nigeria.
