The ongoing heated exchange between Wizkid and Seun Kuti over the legacy and influence of late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has divided Nigerian celebrities and public figures.
The controversy began about a week ago when Seun, Fela’s youngest son, publicly called out Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, for comparing the Afrobeats superstar to his late father.
Seun described such comparisons as disrespectful, insisting that Fela’s legacy goes far beyond music, citing his activism against corrupt leadership and his political influence.

Seun embarked on a seven-day Instagram Live session, largely directed at Wizkid’s fans. Speaking on Tuesday, January 21, 2026, the sixth day of the livestream, Seun questioned Wizkid’s silence despite his repeated attacks on Wizkid FC.
“I’m saying it now, clearly open to all of you. I’ve been attacking Wizkid fans and yet Wizkid has done nothing to me,” Seun said. “I’m insulting and cursing you people and Wizkid has not said anything to protect you. Doesn’t that mean he doesn’t care about you, Wizkid FC?”
Following this, many netizens accused Seun of indirectly attacking Wizkid rather than his fans.
Breaking his silence in defence of his fanbase, Wizkid fired back on social media. Although previously known to be an admirer of Fela Kuti, the singer sparked outrage after declaring that he was “bigger than Fela,” while mocking Seun Kuti and daring him to do his worst.
“Fela fight for freedom, this fool dey fight FC!” Wizkid wrote, questioning Seun’s personal achievements outside his father’s legacy.
Wizkid’s response further escalated the feud, prompting reactions from Seun Kuti’s siblings, who also took to social media to defend their father while attacking Wizkid, his parents, and his fanbase.
The debate over Fela’s legacy and Wizkid’s place in Nigerian music history has since drawn reactions from celebrities, influencers, comedians, and religious figures.
Comedian Edo Pikin weighed in with a reflective take, stressing that greatness is not measured by popularity alone.
“Yes, Wizkid is a great artiste and Fela is a legend,” he said. “But history does not measure greatness with sound; it measures greatness with impact. Fela’s songs were weapons against oppression. He paid for his music with jail terms, beatings, and persecution. Let us not confuse streams with revolution.”
Gospel singer Testimony Jaga took a more critical stance, describing Fela as a negative influence and accusing Seun Kuti of hypocrisy for reacting to insults against his father after previously attacking Pastor E.A. Adeboye.
“When you were abusing Baba Adeboye, why didn’t his children and church members come for you?” he asked. “If you disrespect elders, your elders will also be disrespected.”
Popular influencer Esabod urged restraint, noting that Fela belongs to all Nigerians, not just his family.
“Fela isn’t just your father. He’s a father to millions and the godfather of Afrobeat,” she wrote. “When you say ‘my father is bigger than everybody’s father,’ don’t be shocked when someone replies the same way. Let the legend rest.”
Comedian Funnybone also advised silence and restraint, stating that true influence lies in preservation, not excessive argument.
On the opposing side, influencer Tosin Silverdam argued that Wizkid’s global achievements place him above Fela in terms of scale.
“If we’re being honest, Wizkid is bigger than Fela,” he said, citing Wizkid’s billions of global music streams.
Socialite Cubana Chief Priest criticised Seun Kuti for dragging his father’s name into the controversy, while other public figures, including Portable and Daddy Freeze, also joined the debate.
As the feud continues to trend, it has reignited wider conversations around legacy, generational impact, activism versus entertainment, and how Nigeria’s music pioneers should be remembered and respected.
