Nigerian musician Baba Fryo has criticised Afrobeats star Wizkid over his recent claim that he is “bigger” than late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The controversy began after Seun Kuti, Fela’s son, rebuked Wizkid’s fans for comparing the singer to his father, describing such comparisons as disrespectful to Fela’s legacy and urging fans to stop dragging the icon into online debates.
Wizkid later responded via his Instagram story, declaring that he was “bigger than Fela” and directing insults at Seun Kuti, a move that further escalated tensions and sparked widespread backlash on social media.

Reacting to the feud, Baba Fryo expressed disappointment, particularly with what he described as a lack of respect for cultural and musical history among younger generations.
“I just dey shame for this Gen Z. How can these kids compare a kid to an elder? Fela was a great musician, a multi-instrumentalist, a revolutionist,” he wrote.
He stressed that Fela’s impact went beyond hit songs, noting that the Afrobeat pioneer remained relevant for over three decades until his death.
“Fela wasn’t just an artist but a full-time musician. He stayed relevant for over 30 years till the day he died,” Baba Fryo added.
Drawing a cultural comparison, he said such comments would be unthinkable elsewhere: “A Jamaican artist would never do such to Bob Marley. I dey shame for this youth.”
The exchange has reignited conversations around respect for music legends, generational gaps in appreciating cultural icons, and how contemporary artists engage with the legacies of industry pioneers.
Many fans and critics have since sided with Baba Fryo, insisting that Fela Kuti’s contributions to music and activism deserve lasting reverence.
