The Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) has described the health insurance initiative of Governor Siminalayi Fubara as a life-saving intervention that is steadily transforming access to healthcare across the state.
This position was made known on Wednesday, January 14, 2025, when the management of RIVCHPP, led by its Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vetty Agala, paid a courtesy visit to the Head of Service of Rivers State, Dr. (Mrs) Inyingi Brown, at the State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt.
Dr. Agala said the operationalisation of the state health insurance scheme has eased the financial burden of medical care for residents, particularly the vulnerable, adding that Rivers State now ranks 13th nationally in Universal Health Coverage.
She also appreciated Governor Fubara for his support to the health sector and public service, noting that his interventions have strengthened institutional performance.
Dr. Agala disclosed plans for RIVCHPP to dedicate a weekly day from January 2026 to share beneficiary testimonies, aimed at boosting awareness and enrolment.
The Executive Secretary further revealed that several beneficiaries under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund were saved from delisting due to the state government’s intervention over National Identification Number (NIN) requirements, calling for continued support to help vulnerable persons obtain their NIN.
In her response, Dr. Brown commended RIVCHPP’s efforts and pledged support for the enrolment of the formal sector into the scheme, while urging health agencies to maintain quality service delivery, especially in rural areas.
The visit concluded with the presentation of souvenirs and a group photograph.
