The semi-final line-up for this season’s Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) has been officially confirmed following the conclusion of the quarter-final stage.
Arsenal sealed the final spot on Tuesday night, joining Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle United in the last four of the competition.
With three semi-final places already decided, attention turned to the final quarter-final clash between Arsenal and Crystal Palace.
The result completed the semi-final picture, setting up two blockbuster ties: Arsenal vs Chelsea and Manchester City vs Newcastle United.
The semi-finals will be played over two legs. Arsenal will face Chelsea, with the first leg scheduled at Stamford Bridge in the week beginning January 12, before the return leg at the Emirates Stadium on February 3 or 4. Manchester City and Newcastle United will contest the other semi-final.
Arsenal booked their place after a dramatic encounter that finished 1–1 in normal time against Crystal Palace before heading to penalties. The Gunners edged the shootout 8–7, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga making the decisive save to settle an intense contest.
Maxence Lacroix inadvertently put Palace behind in the 79th minute when he turned the ball into his own net under pressure from William Saliba, following a dangerous corner from Bukayo Saka.
However, Palace fought back in stoppage time as Marc Guéhi struck from close range to force penalties. In the shootout, both sides converted repeatedly until Kepa denied Lacroix’s effort, sending Arsenal through to the semi-finals and keeping their EFL Cup hopes firmly alive
