A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dissolved the National Working Committee (NWC) and set up a caretaker panel at a meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) held at the abode of Wike on Sunday.
The tenure of the PDP NWC elected in October 2021 will elapse on Tuesday.
The 13-member panel committee, chaired by Abdulrahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu as Secretary, is expected to run the party’s affairs for 60 days, pending the conduct of a national convention.
Other members of the committee include: Kamaldeen Ajibade (national legal adviser), Umar Bature (national organising secretary), Kyari Grema, Janguda Mohammed, Okechukwu Osuana, Nwogu Olaka, Sandy Onor, Adenike Ogunse, Bisi Kolawole, Deji Doherty, and Ibrahim Aboki.
The New Daily Prime reported in November that month that former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, was elected the new National Chairman of the PDP by a faction of the party supported by the PDP governors, including Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi; and Seyi Makinde of Oyo; at the recent Ibadan convention.
AT the convention, the PDP expelled Wike, former PDP National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kamaldeen Ajibade; former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose; and Hon. Austin Nwachukwu, among others.
According to convention officials, the expulsion followed the presentation of a report detailing actions said to violate the PDP constitution, including open fraternisation with rival political interests and alleged attempts to undermine party cohesion in key electoral contests.
The Wike group turned down the expulsion and has formed a parallel NWC, Board of Trustees (BoT), and NEC, which led to the Wike faction also expelling members of the Makinde faction.
