Barely hours after being impeached as Cross River State chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Barrister Alphonsus Ogar Eba has dismissed the action as “a joke taken too far,” insisting the move is illegal and will not stand.
In a brief interview on Thursday, Eba, who styles himself the “Political Evangelist,” said: “My purported impeachment is a joke taken too far. God will speak at the appropriate time. I won’t say more than this for now.”
Earlier in the day, 30 of the 32 members of the State Executive Committee (SEC), backed by all 18 local government chapter chairmen, secretaries and vice-chairmen, voted overwhelmingly to remove him over allegations of financial misappropriation, high-handedness and failure to pay stipends to party officials for several months.
The State Working Committee immediately declared the impeachment “done and dusted” and named Ntufam Ekum Ojogu as acting chairman.
At his formal unveiling at the party secretariat in Calabar, Ojogu pledged to heal divisions and rebuild grassroots structures.
“I am deeply humbled to serve as acting chairman,” he told supporters.
“Your solidarity during this transition shows the resilience and love we have for our party and for Cross River State. We will work tirelessly to restore stability, accountability and deliver democratic dividends to our people.”
Ojogu thanked the 18 chapter chairmen, ward executives and polling-unit coordinators for “keeping the party’s flame alive” and promised an inclusive administration focused on unity ahead of future elections.
