The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, visited Borno State as part of efforts to end insurgency in the North-East region. He stated that the Nigerian Army is committed to intensifying its efforts to defeat insurgency in the North East during an operational assessment visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force, North East Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The visit focused on gaining firsthand insight into the security situation in the North East, with particular attention to the effectiveness of ongoing operations and the level of cooperation among security stakeholders working to curb insurgency in the region.
During an address to troops, Gen. Shaibu praised their dedication and bravery in the fight against terrorist groups.
He cautioned them against letting down their guard and encouraged a proactive and aggressive operational stance to restrict the movement and influence of terrorists.

He also highlighted the importance of remaining alert to potential threats and acting swiftly to neutralise them.
In a separate meeting with senior commanders, the COAS underscored the need for strong leadership, seamless coordination, and improved intelligence gathering.
He noted that these factors are essential to sustaining the momentum of recent operational successes under Operation HADIN KAI.
Major Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander JTF NE OPHK, had earlier provided a comprehensive briefing, outlining the achievements recorded in recent months as well as the operational gaps and challenges facing troops in the field.
As part of the assessment visit, Borno State Governor, Prof Zulum, also held discussions with the COAS. The Governor congratulated Lieut Gen. Shaibu on his appointment, describing it as a reward for his extensive operational experience within the theatre.
He credited the Army Chief’s previous roles in the region with contributing significantly to the substantial reduction in insurgent activities.
Governor Zulum expressed confidence in the COAS’s capacity to build on existing successes and help stabilise the region.
He pledged the continued support of the state government and the people of Borno to ongoing military operations and inter-agency cooperation aimed at securing the state and the wider North East.
Responding, Gen. Shaibu expressed gratitude to Governor for his support and emphasised that the Nigerian Army remains unwavering in its commitment to restoring peace, security, and normalcy across Borno and neighbouring states within the theatre.
The COAS was accompanied on the operational visit by senior Principal Staff Officers from Army Headquarters.
