The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has confirmed that it dissolved its executive structure in Akwa Ibom State to safeguard the party’s interests and enforce adherence to national guidelines.
Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, revealed the rationale during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
He alleged that the dissolved state executives were no longer operating impartially, having fallen under the undue influence of Governor Umo Eno, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“In Akwa Ibom State, the governor has left. At both the national working committee and party level, there seems to be no distinction between the state executives and their alignment with the All Progressives Congress, APC,” Ologunagba stated.
Ologunagba invoked Section 10, sub-section 6 of the PDP constitution, which strictly prohibits members from associating with other political parties in a manner that compromises the organisation.
He described belonging to two parties as “an anathema.”
Ologunagba stressed that the party could not ignore Eno’s public declaration that he would oversee both parties, calling such a statement unacceptable and an act of undermining the PDP.
The dissolution, which was announced on Tuesday, resulted in the immediate installation of a caretaker committee.
This new body is chaired by Igwa Umoren, with Borono Bassey, a former state publicity secretary, appointed as secretary to manage administrative and communication affairs.
The move comes approximately four months after Eno’s defection, which marked the end of the PDP’s long-standing political dominance in the state.
Akwa Ibom became the second state in the South-South region to see a PDP governor defect to the APC in recent months, following the departure of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Ologunagba said the executive restructuring was critical to restore order, reassert control, and prevent further erosion of the PDP’s presence in the state.
The New Daily Prime earlier reported that PDP’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu countered Ologunagba, regarding the dissolution of the party’s executive committee.
Anyanwu in a statement addressed to the embattled State Chairman of the Akwa Ibom PDP, declared Ologunagba’s pronouncement null and void.

He clarified that “there was no formal sitting of the National Working Committee, NWC, in which such a decision was taken.”
He insisted that the press release from Ologunagba should be “disregarded.”
