Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has declared that he will not be seeking any political office in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at an event welcoming new members to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), El-Rufai stated that his renewed involvement in politics is solely to support and mentor new, credible leaders.
El-Rufai explained that his original plan after leaving office in 2023 was to step away from active politics.

However, he claimed that recent national events have compelled him to return to a supportive role.
He was quoted as criticizing the current administration, saying Nigerians can see its failings without further explanation.
“This government does nothing but lie every day”, he said, reiterating that he has no personal ambition for the Senate or any other position.
The former governor’s focus, he stated, is now on empowering young people, women, and other reform-minded Nigerians to take control of the political process.
He encouraged young people in Kaduna to register to vote, noting the low registration numbers in the state compared to others.

“Registration is what gives you the right to choose who governs you,” he said.
He ended by urging his supporters to join him in working to “remove the oppressors” from power.
The New Daily Prime earlier reported that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) expelled El-Rufai, for a period of 30 years, citing breaches of party constitution and principles.
The decision, revealed in a statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, on Monday, effectively bars El-Rufai from any association with the SDP until July 28, 2055.
The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) asserted that the expulsion aligns with the SDP’s foundational documents, ideology, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which grants political parties the exclusive right to determine their membership.
