The All Progressives Congress (APC) has clarified that, despite President Bola Tinubu receiving the party’s endorsement for a second term, other members who wish to contest for the presidency will still be allowed to participate in the 2027 primaries.
Sulaiman Argungu, the APC’s National Organising Secretary, made this known on Wednesday while addressing journalists at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
He explained that the endorsement of President Tinubu was not intended to foreclose the chances of other aspirants, stressing that the party would remain open to internal democracy when the time comes.
“We will definitely not close our doors to other presidential aspirants. When the time comes, our timetable will be made known. Anybody who wants to aspire for the presidency under APC will not be denied the opportunity to purchase the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to exercise their franchise,” Argungu said.
He added that the recent endorsement of Tinubu was simply an expression of appreciation for his leadership and achievements so far.
“We never said we had locked the door. We are only telling people that we appreciate what the President is doing for the people of the country and that he deserves a second term in office, which was why we roundly endorsed him recently,” he clarified.
The development comes amid rising speculations within political circles about the APC’s 2027 strategy, with some stakeholders interpreting the endorsement as a move to shut out other aspirants.
The party’s clarification appears aimed at dousing such concerns and reaffirming its commitment to a competitive primary process.
