The Nigerian Navy has announced its plan to establish a new operational base in Yauri, Kebbi State, as part of an expanded strategy to enhance national security, particularly in the Northwest region.
A naval delegation, representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, conveyed the decision during a visit to Governor Nasir Idris yesterday.
Rear Admiral Patrick Nwatu, who led the delegation, explained that while the Navy’s primary responsibilities lie in offshore maritime domains, the new base is crucial for extending security efforts inland.

He highlighted the strategic importance of the River Niger, which, despite its benefits to agriculture and power generation, has become a channel for criminal activity.
“We have noticed that the River Niger has been a convergence of criminals and a route for smuggling of arms and other elements that are detrimental to our interests,” Nwatu stated.
The new base in Kebbi, alongside an existing one in Niger State, is intended to provide a comprehensive naval presence along the river.
Nwatu expressed confidence that this move, with support from the state government and its people, would significantly improve the country’s overall security framework.
Idris welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely and holistic approach to addressing the security challenges plaguing the southern part of the state.
He expressed gratitude for the Navy’s decision, noting that Kebbi, which has never had a naval base, is strategically important due to its shared borders with the Niger and Benin Republics.
The governor pointed out that the presence of the River Niger in Yauri necessitates a robust security force, as the area is currently only patrolled by a small number of marine police officers.
Idris also referenced the growing security concerns in neighbouring countries, which have previously been peaceful, underscoring the urgency of the Navy’s deployment.

He pledged the state government’s full cooperation, promising to provide a temporary location for the base to begin operations while a permanent facility is being constructed.
The governor assured the delegation that this gesture from the Navy would be highly beneficial to the people of Kebbi.
