All doubts on Mikel Arteta’s future at Arsenal are now settled as the Gunners coach sign a new deal with the club. Arteta’s new contract will keep him at his current role through 2027. The Spaniard, also a former Arsenal midfielder, took over the reins at the club in December 2019. His former contract was meant to run out at the end of the current season.
Arteta took over from caretaker manager Freddie Ljungberg who spent a month after Unai Emery’s dismissal. He made a quick impression on Gunners fans, leading the club to FA Cup victory in his first season in charge. He has followed this with two Community Shield triumphs in 2020 and 2023. He has also led Arsenal to two consecutive second-place finishes in the Premier League, contending with his former boss, Pep Guardiola and securing regular Champions League football.
Under Arteta, Arsenal set a new club record for most Premier League wins (28) and most Premier League goals (91) last season. The club also ended the season with a 67.3% win rate, the highest-ever overall win rate in their history. So far, Arteta has won the Premier League Manager of the Month seven times
Reacting to the new contract, the former midfielder expressed happiness at the situation of things at the Emirates. He said,
“I feel extremely proud, very excited and am looking forward to what is coming next. I’m proud to be where I am and have the relationships that I have with everyone at the club. I feel extremely lucky to work every single day with good people and the ambition we have here. I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported and I want to do much more than what we’ve already done together.”
The new contract is coming at an important time, with the Gunners set to go against their rivals Tottenham in the North London Derby this weekend.
