Nigerian comedian, Bright Okpocha, widely known as Basketmouth, has provided clarity on his future in the entertainment industry.
The comedian firmly stated that he has no plans to abandon his comedic roots in favour of filmmaking, despite the lucrative nature of the film industry.
During the premiere event an exclusive gathering that brought together fans and industry professionals alike Basketmouth addressed the speculation surrounding his career choices.
He expressed his determination to maintain a strong presence in the world of stand-up comedy, emphasizing that the success of his film will not divert his attention away from the art form that has defined his career.
“I am still deeply involved in comedy, and I have exciting plans for the future,” Basketmouth conveyed to the audience.
“Starting from next year, I will be embarking on a comedy tour that spans both the UK and the US, and I also plan to perform in Nigeria. Comedy continues to flourish in my life, and I have no intentions of stepping away from it.”
As he discussed his upcoming tour, he provided insights into his strategy for balancing his passion for comedy with his foray into filmmaking.
While Basketmouth acknowledges the financial rewards that can come from private gigs, such as being a master of ceremonies (MC) at weddings, he made it clear that he would cease such activities.
“The only private gigs I’ll consider are performances where I can showcase my stand-up routine,” he asserted.
Basketmouth’s rationale stems from a desire to preserve the integrity of his craft. “I made the decision to stop doing private events because I felt that participating as an MC was skewing my artistic focus. I did not enter this industry to simply host weddings and events. It felt like I was compromising the authenticity of my work. This realization was crucial for me, and I’ve accepted that sacrifice,” he explained.
He further elaborated on the concept of commitment to the art of comedy, implying that each performance should reflect his true artistry rather than serve as a superficial role.
“I want my audience to experience genuine stand-up, not a diluted version of it. If I am booked for a private event, I will prioritize doing my material for 30 minutes and then make my exit, rather than taking on the role of an MC,” he asserted.
Basketmouth’s comments come at a pivotal time in his career, as he navigates the film industry while remaining loyal to his comedic roots.
The premiere of ‘A Ghetto Love Story’ marks an exciting milestone in his artistic journey, showcasing his versatility and commitment to storytelling through film.
Yet, the true essence of what Basketmouth cherishes his love for comedy persists as the driving force behind his choices.
Fans of the comedian can look forward to his vibrant performances, as well as the opportunity to view his film, which aims to provide a refreshing narrative within the Nigerian cinematic landscape.
The balance between film and comedy represents not just a personal endeavour for Basketmouth, but also a broader commentary on the creative landscape in which performers find themselves today.
As Basketmouth moves forward, his voice resonates powerfully within the community. He eloquently articulated the importance of authenticity in artistic expression and the sacrifices required in the pursuit of one’s true passion.
With his upcoming tours and ongoing dedication to stand-up comedy, it is clear that Basketmouth is setting the stage for a remarkable continuation of his illustrious career.
As old paths converge with new horizons, the comedian remains an inspiring figure, committed to ensuring that his love for comedy remains at the heart of everything he does.
The entertainment industry can anticipate a heightened experience as Basketmouth continues to evolve, entertaining audiences worldwide with the unique flair that has made him a household name in Nigeria and beyond.
