Nigerian singer Skales has weighed in on the long-running debate over whether musicians or footballers earn more, arguing that professional football offers more stable financial security than the music industry.
Speaking during a recent episode of the Groovymono show, the “Shake Body” crooner explained that while both industries can be highly lucrative, footballers generally enjoy more consistent earnings compared to musicians, whose income often fluctuates with popularity and relevance.

According to Skales, one major difference between the two professions is that footballers can continue earning substantial salaries even if they are not among the sport’s biggest stars.
“Football money is greater than music,” he said.
“The difference between music money and football money is that you don’t even have to be a big star or a starter in football to make money.”
The singer explained that many professional footballers who are not globally recognised still earn impressive wages through club contracts and endorsements.
In contrast, he noted that the music industry tends to favour only artists who are currently trending or maintaining strong relevance in the public eye.
“But music money is seasonal. An artist can be up today and down tomorrow,” he added.
Skales further stated that the few musicians who manage to remain successful and relevant over a long period often require exceptional consistency, hard work, and what he described as divine grace.
“Artists who have been able to stay relevant consistently are backed by the divine,” he said.
The singer pointed out that football contracts often guarantee players steady income regardless of temporary dips in performance or fame.
“However, in football, even without being relevant you will still be making money,” he explained.
“There are some footballers you don’t even know their names but they are earning well.”
According to him, the structure of professional football offers more financial protection because clubs are obligated to honour player contracts over agreed periods, unlike the entertainment industry where income can suddenly decline if an artist loses momentum.
Skales acknowledged that the music industry still offers massive earning opportunities, especially for top stars, but insisted that sports money operates on a different level in terms of consistency and security.
“Music is also crazy money but sports money is different,” he concluded.
The debate over earnings between footballers and musicians has remained a popular topic among fans and entertainers, especially in Nigeria, where both industries command huge influence and global attention.
While top musicians often make money from streaming, concerts, endorsements, royalties, and brand partnerships, footballers earn through salaries, bonuses, sponsorship deals, and long-term contracts with clubs.
Many Nigerian celebrities and athletes have previously compared the two industries, with some arguing that music offers more freedom and longevity, while others believe football guarantees greater financial stability.
Skales, who rose to fame with his hit song “Shake Body,” has remained active in the Nigerian music scene for over a decade.
Over the years, he has built a reputation for versatility and consistency, collaborating with several local and international artists while maintaining a loyal fan base.
His comments have since sparked reactions online, with many social media users agreeing that football provides more structured and reliable income compared to the unpredictable nature of the music business.
