President Bola Tinubu has told opposition parties that they are free to challenge and help improve his administration’s policies.
He disclosed this information at the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention held in Abuja on Friday.
Tinubu rejected claims that the APC is trying to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.
He stated that a strong opposition is necessary for a healthy democracy and better governance.
Tinubu described these claims as a misunderstanding of the ruling party’s goals.
He noted that Nigeria has enjoyed many years of democracy and that his government remains committed to national unity.
Tinubu said, “Let me reiterate, especially to those who often lament and misunderstand us: we do not seek a one-party state.”
He explained that democracy grows when there is competition and that the role of the opposition is to question and refine policies so that the country can move forward.
He said, “You can challenge, question and help refine policies. That is how improvements and good governance are achieved. That is how all nations thrive.”
He also noted that the constitutional right to freedom of association applies to everyone, including his own party.
