The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed renewed anxiety over the security of students in the North-East after a series of coordinated explosions struck Maiduguri, leaving dozens dead and many others injured.
Reacting to the incident, the NANS Zone E (North-East) Coordinator, Muazu Hina, said the development highlights the fragile security situation in the region and the risks faced daily by students pursuing their education.
The attacks, which occurred on Monday night, targeted crowded locations including the popular Monday Market, the Post Office area, and a location close to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
The near-simultaneous nature of the blasts sparked panic across the city, with emergency responders rushing to assist victims.
Hina described the incident as a tragic reminder of the persistent threat posed by insecurity in the North-East, noting that students remain among the most exposed groups in such crises. He warned that repeated attacks could disrupt academic activities and deepen fear among young people in the region.
The student leader extended condolences to families who lost loved ones and acknowledged the distress of those still searching for missing relatives. He also wished those receiving treatment a quick recovery.
While condemning the attacks, NANS urged security agencies to move swiftly in identifying those responsible and ensuring justice is served. Hina stressed that a credible and transparent investigation would be crucial in reassuring the public and preventing further violence.
He also called on the Federal Government to intensify its efforts in tackling insecurity, particularly in the North-East, where institutions continue to operate under challenging conditions. According to him, safeguarding students must be treated as a priority to prevent disruptions to education.
The association further recommended stronger intelligence operations and increased security deployment around schools and other public facilities frequently accessed by students.
