The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the recent boat accident in the Borgu area of Niger State, which claimed the lives of approximately 32 people.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the tragedy as a painful loss, especially coming just months after devastating floods in Mokwa, also in Niger State.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Government, and the people of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy,” Idris said.
He confirmed that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), would work closely with the Niger State Government to ensure survivors and the families of the deceased receive all necessary assistance and support.

The minister also commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency for its prompt response in rescuing and accounting for passengers from the ill-fated vessel.
Idris used the opportunity to urge Nigerians to prioritise safety when travelling on waterways. He emphasised the life-saving importance of wearing protective jackets during boat trips.
“In particular, no one should embark on boat journeys without wearing appropriate protective jackets. Safety precautions can make the difference between life and death,” he cautioned.
To prevent further tragedies of this nature, the minister announced that the Federal Government had directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to initiate a nationwide sensitisation campaign on waterway safety.
“We pray for the repose of the souls of the deceased and wish the survivors a speedy recovery,” he added.
