The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may offer former President Goodluck Jonathan an automatic ticket to contest the 2027 presidential election, according to the party’s National Financial Secretary, Daniel Woyengikuro.
Speaking in an interview, Woyengikuro expressed strong support for Jonathan’s potential return to active politics, describing him as the most suitable candidate to lead both the party and the nation at this time.
“Is he not the best candidate for us at this moment? He is not just a former president; he is the leader of the party now,” Woyengikuro said.
“Aside from [former President Olusegun] Obasanjo, the next person in line is him. Goodluck Jonathan is the national leader of this party.”
Pressed on whether the PDP would consider giving Jonathan an automatic presidential ticket, he responded unequivocally: “For me, that’s what I firmly stand for. You can quote me anywhere — I want him to come. An automatic ticket for him, as it stands now. Because we must salvage both this party and the nation.”

However, Woyengikuro emphasised that for such a move to materialise, Jonathan would need to re-engage formally with the PDP and assume a more active role in party affairs.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has yet to publicly declare any intention to contest in 2027.
Nonetheless, his potential return is likely to stir debate within the party and across the national political landscape as preparations for the next general election begin to take shape.
