The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered an immediate investigation into the tragic boat mishap that occurred on November 29 along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The incident involved over 160 passengers, with 24 rescued and many others still unaccounted for.
In a statement released by police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kogi State, especially the affected families.
Mr Egbetokun tasked the Force Marine Officer to lead the investigation to uncover the causes of the mishap and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.

The IGP emphasised the police’s commitment to ensuring the safety of waterways and coordinating with relevant agencies for swift rescue operations.
Operational resources have been deployed to intensify search and rescue efforts for the missing passengers.

Mr Egbetokun also urged waterway operators and boat owners to collaborate with the Force Marine Department in implementing critical safety measures to protect lives and prevent such tragedies.
He reiterated police dedication to enhancing water transport safety, ensuring justice for victims, and mitigating future risks through strengthened collaboration with stakeholders and proactive safety strategies.
