Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested five suspected criminals following an armed attack on communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, in an operation that further unearths the continuing security pressures facing rural settlements despite sustained military deployments across the state.
The suspects were apprehended after soldiers attached to the Forward Operating Base in Karim Lamido responded to a distress call reporting an attack by armed men on Thursday, according to a statement issued by the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army.
In a statement on Sunday, military authorities said the troops mobilised immediately to the affected area but encountered resistance upon arrival, coming under gunfire from unidentified attackers.

The soldiers reportedly returned fire and forced the gunmen to retreat into surrounding areas. A pursuit operation that followed led to the arrest of five suspects believed to be connected to the incident.
Recovered from the suspects were two motorcycles, five mobile phones, daggers, machetes, gunpowder, and assorted charms, the army said.
While the military did not disclose the identities of those arrested or provide details of the communities affected by the attack, the operation underscores the persistent challenge security agencies face in parts of Taraba where criminal groups have continued to exploit difficult terrain and remote settlements.
The latest arrests come against a backdrop of recurring reports of armed attacks, kidnappings, and communal violence across sections of the North-Central and North-Eastern regions, where security forces have maintained a series of offensives aimed at disrupting criminal networks.
Despite the fact that arrests and recoveries may demonstrate operational successes, the broader challenge still lies in dismantling the structures that sustain criminal activities, including recruitment channels, local collaborators, and illicit arms supplies.
In the statement, Commander of the 6 Brigade and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Chukwuemeka Michael Akaliro, praised the conduct of the troops involved in the operation.
He described their actions as evidence of the army’s determination to respond swiftly to threats against civilian populations.
Akaliro also reiterated the directive of the Chief of Army Staff that military personnel must remain alert and sustain pressure on criminal elements operating within their areas of responsibility.
He further assured residents of Taraba State that the army would continue pursuing individuals involved in criminal activities and intensify efforts to deny them safe havens.
The operation points to a security approach increasingly centred on rapid response to intelligence and emergency alerts. However, questions remain about the extent to which such interventions can provide lasting stability without broader measures addressing the conditions that enable armed groups to operate.
As far as the residents of affected communities are concerned, the immediate concern is now about protection from attacks that often occur with little warning and leave lasting social and economic consequences.
As of the time of filing this report, the military had not indicated whether additional suspects were being sought or whether further operations linked to the incident were ongoing. The arrested individuals are expected to face further investigation as security agencies work to determine their precise roles in the attack.
