Authorities in New Mexico have identified human remains discovered in a national forest as those of Melissa Casias, an employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory who disappeared in June 2025.
According to the New Mexico State Police, the remains were found last week by a hiker in the McGaffey Ridge area of Carson National Forest, near the city of Taos. A handgun was reportedly recovered near the scene.
Casias, 53, worked as an administrative assistant at Los Alamos National Laboratory and was reported missing on June 26, 2025, after failing to return home or report to work.
Investigators said family members later discovered her personal belongings, including her identification card, purse and mobile phones, raising concerns about her safety.
Before her disappearance, surveillance footage reportedly showed Casias walking alone along a highway while carrying a backpack.
Authorities said the Office of the Medical Investigator is continuing forensic examinations to determine the cause and manner of her death.
CBS News reported that the discovery comes amid broader investigations involving missing and deceased personnel connected to sensitive scientific facilities in the United States.
Casias was the second Los Alamos employee reported missing in 2025, following the disappearance of Anthony Chavez, 78, in May of that year.
According to reports, federal investigators are examining whether there are any links between several cases involving scientists and staff associated with nuclear and space technology facilities. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading that inquiry.

In a statement, New Mexico State Police extended condolences to Casias’ family and said the investigation into her disappearance remains active.
Her relatives also confirmed the identification through a social media page dedicated to finding her.
“We confirm that the remains found in Rio Chiquito are Melissa,” the family said.
The statement added that Casias was found in an area that had previously been searched and that the family intends to continue seeking answers about the circumstances surrounding her death.
“This is a lot to process; our hearts are heavy and we fully intend to continue to pursue answers for justice,” the family said.
