The deputy governor of Lagos state, Obafemi Hamzat, has submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2027 governorship election in the state under the All Progressives Congress (APC)
Hamzat, who makde this known via his X handle, on Thursday, described it as a journey about service, responsibility, and building a Lagos that works better for every family, every business and every person that calls this state home.
In his tweet, he stated “We have made progress together but there is still more to do. I am stepping forward with experience, purpose and a deep belief in the future of our state. The journey to a greater Lagos continues.”
The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest advisory body of the party in Lagos State, had recently endorsed Hamzat as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was disclosed on by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, Jubril Gawat, in a post on X, where he confirmed that the decision was reached unanimously during a high-level meeting held at Lagos House, Marina.
“The Governance Advisory Council (GAC) today unanimously endorsed and adopted the Deputy Governor of Lagos State Dr Obafemi Hamzat to be consensus candidate for the 2027 elections in Lagos State,” Gawat wrote.
According to the post, the announcement was made by the GAC leader, Tajudeen Olusi, who spoke on behalf of the council members during the meeting. Gawat further noted that members of the council had also contributed financially towards the purchase of Hamzat’s nomination form, a move interpreted as strong institutional backing within the party structure.

“The GAC members also announced that they paid for his nomination form,” he added, describing te endorsement as a significant consolidation of internal party support ahead of the elections.
The development comes shortly after Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu publicly endorsed Hamzat as his preferred successor.
The governor made the declaration following a closed-door meeting at Lagos House, Marina, where Hamzat formally informed members of the State Executive Council and party leaders of his intention to contest for the governorship seat.
Sanwo-Olu praised Hamzat’s experience and character, stating that the deputy governor was well-prepared for the role. “Mr Deputy Governor is a man who is fit and well-prepared for this job. He is a man who knows where all the rooms in the house are,” he said, highlighting Hamzat’s familiarity with the workings of the state government.
