Nigerian singer Crown Uzama, popularly known as Shallipopi, revealed that he faced harsh treatment from some colleagues while trying to break into the mainstream music scene between 2023 and 2024.
The “Ex-convict” crooner disclosed in a post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle. In the message, he expressed frustration over what he described as a lack of support and acceptance from fellow artists during the early stage of his career.

According to him, several figures in the industry did not offer him a welcoming environment. Instead, he suggested that he experienced rejection and hostility at a time when he was still striving to establish himself.
“2023/2024 many artist pour me spit for face… I mean manyyyyyy,” he wrote.
Furthermore, Shallipopi stated that those experiences had a lasting impact on his personality and outlook. He admitted that the treatment he received contributed to his current attitude, which he described as being tougher and less accommodating.
“That’s why I’m extra mean,” he added, expressing lingering resentment over the period.
His comments sparked reactions online, with many fans debating the challenges faced by emerging artists in Nigeria’s competitive music industry. While some sympathised with his experience, others called for restraint in his choice of words.
Shallipopi rose to prominence after his breakout single, Elon Musk, went viral on social media. The track quickly gained traction, turning him into an internet sensation and introducing his unique style to a wider audience.
Following the success of the original version, he released a remix featuring Zlatan Ibile and Fireboy DML. The collaboration further boosted his profile and helped solidify his place in the industry.
In addition, Shallipopi had previously acknowledged the role Zlatan played in his rise. In an Instagram post shared in October 2023, he credited the rapper for supporting his career at a crucial stage.
He noted that Zlatan gave his career “life” without demanding anything in return, highlighting a rare moment of support amid the challenges he described.
Meanwhile, industry observers noted that Shallipopi’s story reflects the broader struggles many up-and-coming artists face.
Breaking into the mainstream often involves navigating competition, limited opportunities, and varying levels of support from established acts.
Despite the difficulties, Shallipopi’s rise demonstrated how viral moments and strategic collaborations can change an artist’s trajectory. His success also underscored the growing influence of social media in shaping modern music careers.
Overall, his remarks shed light on the less visible side of the entertainment industry, where rejection and rivalry can coexist with success and recognition.
