Tinubu, in a statement issued from the State House on Thursday ahead of the commencement of the party’s primaries, called on governors, party officials, delegates and other stakeholders to ensure that women and youths are not sidelined in the selection of candidates for various elective positions.
He made the appeal as the ruling party prepares to begin its primary elections, starting with aspirants for the House of Representatives and ending with the presidential primary scheduled for 25 May 2026.
Tinubu said the participation of women and young people in the democratic process must be treated as a priority, describing both groups as critical to the future of the party and the country.

“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart,” he said.
He continued, “I appeal to voters in the primaries and leaders at all levels to give special consideration to our women and youth in the contest. We cannot afford to relegate the two significant demographics of our population.”
Tinubu’s message placed special attention on inclusion, even as he reminded party members that the primary elections should not be seen merely as a process for producing candidates but as an opportunity to strengthen unity within the party.
He noted that the party, now entering its fourth election cycle, was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice and service and urged members to preserve those values during the exercise.
He also encouraged party leaders to create an atmosphere where every aspirant, regardless of status or political influence, can compete fairly.
Addressing governors and other senior figures in the party, Tinubu urged them to rise above personal interests and ensure fairness throughout the primaries.
“You must rise above sentiment to offer all aspirants a level playing field that guarantees participation without . . . hindrance,” he said.
Tinubu further stressed that while consensus arrangements remain a useful option for reducing internal disagreements, members should maintain peace wherever contests become necessary.
He urged contestants to conduct themselves as sportsmen and sportswomen, adding that winners should avoid triumphalism while those who lose should accept the outcome with maturity.
He also warned against the return of what he described as do-or-die politics, saying the party must continue to promote internal democracy, inclusion and peaceful competition as it prepares for the next general election.
