A group of Christian leaders, Calvary Grace International College of Bishops (CGCOB), has requested the removal of Nigeria’s current constitution during a press meeting in Lagos.
The bishops argued that the constitution is unfair and does not protect the interests of all Nigerians.
The President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke, who spoke for the bishops, noted that the current laws are biased.
He maintained that the constitution recognises Islam and Sharia law but does not give the same recognition to Christianity.
Oke also explained that Christians make up more than half of the people living in Nigeria.
Because of this, it is believed the current laws do not represent the whole country.
He stated that the constitution does not consider the needs of over 50 percent of the population, suggesting that the old one be removed and a new one that is fair and just for every citizen be created.
The bishops also raised a serious warning about safety.
They claimed there is a “Christian genocide” happening in some parts of Nigeria, where believers are being targeted and killed.
They expressed deep concern and insisted that the current constitution be scrapped.
“. . . let’s scrap it and have one that is fair and just for everybody.”
The call for removal of the current constitution, according to them, is to ensure that the rights of all Nigerians are respected and protected.
