The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said its recent leadership crisis was the result of internal sabotage, as the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) stepped in to take control after a court ruling.
The BoT Chairman, Adolphus Wabara, made this known on Sunday, May 3, 2026, during the opening of the party’s 84th BoT meeting.
He explained that the board assumed leadership following a judgement by the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered on April 30, 2026.

Supreme court nullifies PDP Ibadan meet, crisis grows
Wabara said the court ruling removed the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and cancelled the 2025 national convention that produced it.
He noted that the BoT acted quickly to prevent a leadership vacuum, in line with the party’s constitution.
The crisis, as he explained, did not happen by chance. He said some suspended party officials worked with “enemies of the PDP” to stop the convention and weaken the party before the 2027 general elections.
He stated that these individuals secretly filed a court case to block the planned convention in Ibadan and kept it hidden from the party leadership.
He explained that when the NWC became aware of the case, it tried to defend the party but faced challenges, including the refusal of a suspended legal officer to release important documents.
Wabara said that a court later gave a judgement against the party just weeks before the convention, noting that the Supreme Court later confirmed that suspended officers could not act on behalf of the party.
He said this ruling made the Abuja convention held by those individuals invalid.
Wabara described the situation as a serious attempt to damage the party from within.
He said, “I have taken us through this lane for us to see the severe internal sabotage perpetuated by some individuals working for the APC with the aim to cripple our party ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
Despite the crisis, he said the PDP remains strong. He noted that many Nigerians have continued to show support for the party, which has encouraged its leaders to stay focused.
He also announced that the party has secured approval from two-thirds of its National Executive Committee members to hold its 103rd NEC meeting on Monday, May 4, 2026. He said the Independent National Electoral Commission has been informed.
Wabara urged party members to stay united and focus on rebuilding. He said the BoT would work to restore stability and prepare the party for future elections.
