The Kwara State Police Command has recovered a stolen vehicle in Ilorin using modern tracking technology, in what officials described as a major operational success.
The incident occurred on April 27, 2026, when a Toyota Matrix was reportedly stolen at about 11:00 a.m. from a parking space at Mandate Market in Ilorin.
According to the police, a report was received around 2:00 p.m. at the Anti-Car Theft Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), which prompted immediate action.

Police operatives quickly deployed a technology-based response to track the vehicle.
The command said in a statement on Tuesday, “Acting promptly, operatives activated an integrated vehicle tracking and immobilisation system linked to the vehicle’s security device.”
The system provided real-time location data and allowed officers to disable the engine remotely, which helped to stop the movement of the vehicle.
It added, “The technology enabled real-time geolocation tracking and remote engine immobilisation, which significantly aided the recovery effort.”
The vehicle was later traced to the Jebba Expressway area, where it was found abandoned by the roadside.
Further checks showed that the suspects tried to avoid detection by changing the vehicle’s registration number. However, the original number plate was recovered close to where the car was found.
The police said, “The vehicle’s location was successfully traced to the Jebba Expressway axis, where it was found abandoned by the roadside.”
The recovered car has been taken to the SCID in Ilorin for further investigation, while efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest those behind the theft.
The statement noted, “The vehicle has been recovered and secured at the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.”
The police assured residents that they will continue to use technology and intelligence to fight crime across the state.
The statement further said, “The Kwara State Police Command reiterates its commitment to leveraging modern technology and intelligence-led policing in combating crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property.”
At the time of filing this report, authorities say the case is still under investigation, with more updates expected as efforts to track down the suspects continue.
