President Bola Tinubu has assured Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum of the federal government’s commitment to providing substantial assistance to the victims of the recent flooding in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The flooding, which has displaced numerous residents and caused significant damage to homes and public infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and businesses left many in urgent need of relief.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and obtained by The New Daily Prime on Tuesday, President Tinubu directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to promptly deliver aid to those affected by the disaster.
Expressing deep concern over the situation in Maiduguri, Mr Tinubu reaffirmed his dedication to mobilizing federal resources to support Borno State during this challenging period.
The statement partly read: “The worst flood in recent decades has displaced thousands of residents and affected facilities such as the Post office and the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. President Tinubu extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of the state, especially to the families that have lost their means of livelihood due to the disaster triggered by the overflow of the Alau Dam.
“While relevant authorities are still assessing the damage wrought by the flood, the President calls for the immediate evacuation of people from affected areas.”
In its Tuesday report, BBC said zoo officials confirmed the escape of several wild animals following the flood that hit the state. On Tuesday, videos showing some of the escaped creatures roaming the streets have been widely circulated on social media.
