During his time at the UN, he secured a significant diplomatic win as UN Secretary-General António Guterres commended Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
Shettima’s address on behalf of Tinubu called for sweeping UN reforms, a permanent Security Council slot for Nigeria, and demanded that Africa be granted control over its $700 billion mineral wealth.
He actively engaged with the global community to promote Nigeria’s economic and strategic position.
Shettima successfully “showcased Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition opportunity to global investors” and worked to strengthen strategic partnerships with the United Kingdom on critical areas, including trade, defence, and migration.
Highlighting Nigeria’s potential, Shettima positioned the country as the “natural hub” for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a market valued at $3.4 trillion.
He also held productive discussions with the Gates Foundation focused on expanding healthcare and education initiatives across the country.
