Popular Nigerian actress Ekene Umenwa has revealed that she once faced pressure from insiders in Nollywood to abandon her Christian faith in exchange for success in the film industry.
In an emotional Instagram post shared on Wednesday, Umenwa recounted how a group of unnamed individuals advised her to “drop Jesus and Mary” if she truly wanted to make it big in Nollywood.
A test of faith in the spotlight
Umenwa described the moment as a serious test of her beliefs. She said the suggestion shocked her deeply and made her question the industry she had just entered. However, she made it clear that she never considered giving up her relationship with Jesus.
“When I came to Nollywood many years ago with my Jesus,” she wrote in the post, “I was told by some folks to drop Jesus and Mary, to go with the flow, so I could succeed. They said, ‘Ekene, this game no be Jesus Jesus oo.’”
According to her, the comment came from a small but powerful group within the industry. She did not name them but referred to them as a “cabal” trying to influence her choices.
Holding firm to her beliefs
Rather than follow their advice, Umenwa said she turned to her faith for strength. She recalled running back to what she described as her spiritual foundation.
“I was like, ‘Chimo, is that so? Never,” she wrote. “I ran to my Father. And Jesus told me to move ahead, ahead.”
The actress posted a video of herself dancing to the well-known gospel song No Turning Back, a symbolic nod to her decision to remain committed to her Christian values. The video has since drawn support from many of her fans and fellow believers.
A growing christian voice in nollywood
Umenwa expressed gratitude that her decision to stand by her faith has inspired others in the industry. She said she’s proud that more people in Nollywood are now openly declaring their faith in Jesus.
“I thank God today that many people have joined me to proclaim Jesus in Nollywood,” she wrote.
Her post has sparked fresh conversations on social media about the pressures that entertainers face and how faith can serve as both a shield and a guide in difficult times.
