A South Carolina couple has been arrested after authorities discovered their 6-month-old twins covered in bite wounds allegedly caused by large rats inside their home.
Akayla and Justin Bearden, both 24, are facing two counts each of unlawful conduct toward a child after sheriff’s deputies found their infant daughter bloodied and mauled in a bassinet on May 9. According to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, the child had suffered multiple bite marks to her arms, head, ears, and face.
Her twin brother was also found with severe bite wounds, primarily on his feet. The couple reportedly told authorities that field rats had been a persistent problem in their home for several months.
The injured girl was rushed to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where she remained under care for several days. Authorities have since placed the twins and the couple’s third child in the custody of the Department of Social Services (DSS).
Investigators said Akayla Bearden contacted authorities on the day of the incident, seeking help after one of the rats attacked her daughter in the bassinet.
Both parents have been barred from any contact with their children unless specifically permitted by DSS, according to Fox Carolina.
The shocking case has raised concerns over the living conditions of vulnerable children and the responsibility of parents to ensure a safe environment. The investigation remains ongoing.
