As the yuletide season approaches, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has assured Nigerians of heightened security measures to safeguard lives and property during the festive period.
In a statement by Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police spokesperson said the IGP has directed the immediate deployment of police personnel to strategic locations nationwide to curb traffic disruptions, highway robberies, and other criminal activities.
The deployment, he said includes enhanced police presence along highways, urban centres, and recreational hubs.
Adejobi added that the proactive measure aims to deter criminal activities, particularly highway robberies, which often escalate during periods of increased public mobility and gatherings.
He said in a show of commitment to public safety, the police have recorded significant successes in tackling armed robbery.
According to him, on December 10, police operatives in Lagos arrested four suspected robbers—Akeem Alabi, Adewale Sogbesan, Emmanuel Izeagbe, and Francis Okoko—believed to be part of a robbery syndicate operating around the Costain area of the state.
He said the suspects reportedly confessed to their crimes during interrogation.
Similarly, on December 6, Adejobi stated that police operatives in Anambra State apprehended a suspected armed robber, Miracle Mwakaloi, in Awka.
He noted that the suspect later led officers to his residence, where three AK-47 rifles were recovered.
Adejobi emphasised police dedication to creating a safe environment throughout and beyond the festive season.
“Ongoing measures include increased patrols, community engagement, and focused efforts on public safety. Citizens are urged to cooperate with law enforcement officials, who will maintain professionalism and respect for human rights”, he said.
According to him, the IGP also encouraged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police or other security agencies.
Adejobi reiterated the police’s commitment to ensuring a crime-free yuletide celebration.
