The Accord Party has announced that it will not field a governorship candidate in Abia State during the 2027 elections, declaring its support for Governor Alex Otti ahead of the polls.
The decision was disclosed on Wednesday during a visit by the party’s national leadership to Governor Otti at his country home in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area.
Speaking during the visit, the National Chairman of the Accord Party, Christopher Imumolen, said the governor’s performance in office informed the party’s decision to support his administration and re-election bid.
According to Imumolen, opposition parties should not exist solely to criticise governments but should also acknowledge achievements where necessary.
He stated that Governor Otti’s leadership and developmental efforts in Abia State had convinced the party’s national leadership that he deserved continued support.
“The performance of Governor Alex Otti has earned him the support of the national leadership of the Accord Party,” Imumolen said.
He added that political parties in Nigeria should place the interests and welfare of citizens above partisan rivalry.
Also speaking during the visit, the National Secretary of the party, Mukhtar Abdullah Djungo, confirmed that the party would not present any governorship aspirant in the state for the 2027 elections.
“On behalf of our party, I want to assure Your Excellency that no candidate from our party will be contesting for the governorship position in Abia State,” Djungo stated.
He further revealed that the party’s National Working Committee had directed the Accord Party structure in the state to collaborate with the Labour Party in support of Otti’s administration and future political ambition.
“The National Working Committee has directed the State Executive of the party to join hands with the Labour Party and work for the good of the people of Abia State. Let the good work continue,” he added.
Responding, Governor Otti expressed appreciation to the Accord Party leadership for what he described as their understanding and support.
The governor said politics should primarily focus on improving the welfare and security of the people, stressing that governance must remain centred on public interest rather than political divisions.
“The whole essence of politics is about the welfare of our people and security of our people,” Otti said.
He also assured the party leadership of his willingness to work with all groups and individuals committed to the development and progress of Abia State.
The endorsement by the Accord Party comes as political parties and stakeholders across the country begin positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with alliances and strategic partnerships expected to shape campaigns in several states.
