Six lawmakers elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Ogun State House of Assembly have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing a prolonged internal crisis within their former party.
The decision was made public on Sunday, March 29, as the lawmakers formally announced their switch, describing it as a necessary step driven by ongoing leadership challenges in the PDP.
According to the defectors, the party’s internal disputes and lack of stability made it difficult for them to continue their political careers under its platform.

Lawmakers Cite Prolonged Crisis
The lawmakers involved in the defection are Lukman Adeleye, Bello Damilare, Lawal Samsideen, Oluseun Samuel, Owode Waliu, and Dickson Kolawole.
Their move adds to the growing number of PDP members leaving the party in Ogun State, as two other lawmakers had earlier defected last year.
Speaking on behalf of the group, the Minority Leader, Lukman Adeleye, said the decision to leave the PDP was not taken lightly.
He explained that the persistent leadership crisis within the party had created an environment that was no longer conducive for effective political engagement.
“It is a tough decision, but we have been left with no choice but to move on with our political careers due to the protracted leadership crisis that has engulfed our party for years,” Adeleye said.
Praise for Tinubu and Abiodun
Adeleye noted that the lawmakers were influenced by what they described as the performance of President Bola Tinubu and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.
He commended Tinubu’s economic policies, stating that they show a clear direction for national development despite existing challenges.
The Minority Leader also praised Governor Abiodun for his efforts in improving governance and delivering development projects across Ogun State.
According to Adeleye, the defecting lawmakers have worked closely with Governor Abiodun over the past three years to improve the lives of residents in the state.
He said their decision to join the APC would allow them to continue supporting policies and programmes aimed at development.
The lawmakers expressed their readiness to align fully with the ruling party in Ogun State and contribute to ongoing initiatives.
Growing Political Realignment in Ogun
The defection highlights a broader shift in the political landscape of Ogun State, as internal disagreements continue to affect party structures at the state level.
Observers say such movements could have implications for future elections, particularly as parties reposition themselves ahead of upcoming political contests.
The PDP, which has faced internal challenges in several states, may need to address its leadership issues to prevent further defections.
