Those who kidnapped Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, have made contact with the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, and demanded the ransom of ₦200 million for his release from captivity.
The Auchi Diocese is led by Bishop Gabriel Dunia.
The Director of Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, confirmed the ransom demand in text message to journalists in Benin, simply saying, “It is true”.
However, a source who asked not to be named, said, “The kidnappers contacted the Auchi Catholic Diocese on Monday evening and asked them to pay ₦200 million if they want them to release the kidnapped priest.
“As at yesterday, negotiation was yet to commence with the kidnappers and I don’t know whether the Catholic family will discussed ransom negotiation.”
Rev. Fr. Oyode was kidnapped by gunmen on Sunday at about 7pm at Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary School, Ivanokpodi, in Agenegbode, Etsako East local government area of Edo State.
The gunmen also reportedly kidnapped two students after sporadic shootings.
Rev Fr. Oyode, however, pleaded with the kidnappers to free the students and instead kidnap him who is the Rector and custodian of the students.
The gunmen were said to have heeded the Rev. Father’s plea, and released the two students before going away with him.
