Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is “the best thing to happen to education in Nigeria”, referencing what he considered as major achievements in the sector under the Tinubu-led administration.
Omokri, in a post shared on his Facebook handle on Sunday, made remarks praising Tinubu’s policies on students, lecturers, and schools.
He said the present government has brought stability to universities across the country.

He stated, “Since 1973, when the National Association of University Teachers (which later transformed into ASUU) went on a national strike, there has been no administration in Nigeria lasting over a year in which university lecturers did not go on a national strike. Please fact-check me.”
He affirmed, “The only exception to this historical fact is the Tinubu government.”
Referring to the experience of students, Omokri said, “When you are admitted to a university under President Tinubu, a four-year course is a four-year course!”
He also said, “As a student, have you experienced nationwide strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities in the last three years? Never! You can plan your life under this President.”
Omokri further claimed that lecturers now enjoy better welfare.
“Not only are your lecturers better paid under Tinubu, but almost a million of your fellow students are benefiting from President Tinubu’s interest-free NELFUND Student Loan since the President signed the Student Loan Bill into law on Monday, June 12, 2023,” he said.
He linked this to wider progress in the education sector.
Omokri stated, “As a result of these investments in education, 21 Nigerian universities were listed among the top 54 universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings, the highest ever.”
On funding and infrastructure, Omokri revealed, “Under President Tinubu, aside from defence and security, the Federal Government has allocated more funds to education in our budgets than to any other sector and has built more than 20 new schools nationwide, in addition to maintaining the thousands of schools that already exist.”
With confidence, he declared, “President Tinubu is the best thing to happen to education in Nigeria!”
Omokri also addressed critics. He said, “Irrespective of their reactions to this truthful commentary, I have every confidence in the ability of Nigerian students and their parents to separate facts from propaganda.”
His comments, however, have drawn reactions from people, as education remains a significant issue in Nigeria.
